Senior Research Officer 

Background 

Ruth has had a varied career spanning academic research, entrepreneurship, and the charity sector. She completed a PhD and postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge before taking time out to raise her family and start a small sustainable business from home. 

After returning to the workplace, Ruth moved into community engagement and sustainable transport, where she worked in behaviour change and engagement roles. While she enjoyed the sector, her long-term goal was to return to a research focused position where data and analysis were central to her work. 

To support this transition, she enrolled on the Data Analysis Programme with ITOL Recruit. 

Training Experience 

Ruth completed CompTIA Data+ and Business Analysis Foundation, alongside in-depth training in SQL, Tableau, Python, and Excel. She valued the balance between theory and hands on practice, which allowed her to refresh and modernise the research skills she had developed earlier in her career. 

The flexibility of the programme was essential. With a 12-month study window, Ruth was able to balance full time work, family life, and learning. Regular tutor check ins helped her stay on track and supported her throughout the process. 

Recruitment Support and Career Transition 

The recruitment phase played a key role in Ruth’s success. Her recruitment advisor provided a full CV refresh, LinkedIn optimisation, and practical guidance on applications and interviews. This support gave Ruth structure, accountability, and confidence during what can be an intense job search process. 

Within three months of starting her applications, Ruth secured multiple interviews and was offered a role as Senior Research Officer at Transport for All. She officially began the role in January 2025.

Ruth is now working in a research role that aligns directly with her skills, interests, and values. The programme helped her sharpen her technical knowledge, rebuild confidence, and demonstrate her capabilities with recent, relevant certifications.
